The Federal Government says four major gas projects have reached Final Investment Decisions (FIDs), attracting about 3.5 billion dollars in committed investments to Nigeria’s gas sector.

The ‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (Gas), Dr Ekperikpe Ekpo, said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

The engagement focused on the milestones recorded in Nigeria’s gas sector under his leadership since he assumed office in August 2023, as well as key developments and the outlook for the sector.

Ekpo listed the projects as the Iseni Project, valued at about 122 million dollars; Ubeta Project, 566 million dollars; HI Project, two billion dollars; and Ima Project, 800 million dollars.

“These  are not  merely  project  milestones;  they  are  evidence that  responsible  investment  can create enduring domestic value, strengthen productive capacity and generate employment.

“Our duty is clear: to raise production, build faster, mobilise greater investment, expand clean-energy access and ensure that Nigeria’s gas wealth delivers enduring prosperity for every Nigerian,” he said.

He said the investments demonstrated growing confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and would strengthen domestic productive capacity, create jobs and support economic growth.

The minister said the about 3.5 billion-dollar Brass Methanol Project had also advanced toward execution following the resolution of its Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement.

According to him, Nigeria’s proven gas reserves increased from about 208.83 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in 2023 to 215.19 TCF as of Jan. 1, 2026.

He said average gas production also increased from about 6.86 billion cubic feet per day (BCF/D) in 2023 to about 7.5 BCF/D, while domestic supply had crossed two BCF/D.

Ekpo said the Federal Government was targeting gas production of 10 BCF/D in the near term and 12 BCF/D by 2030 to meet growing demand from power generation, industries, fertiliser, petrochemicals, LNG and other markets.

He said Nigeria LNG’s capacity utilisation had also risen from about 59 per cent in 2023 to 87 per cent year-to-date in 2026.

According to him, the ongoing Train 7 project is expected to add about eight million tonnes per annum to NLNG’s existing 22 million tonnes capacity when completed in June 2027.

“This will raise total production capacity to about 30 million tonnes per annum and strengthen Nigeria’s gas-processing and export capacity,” he said.

The minister said the Decade of Gas initiative had been institutionalised following President Bola Tinubu’s approval, providing a framework for coordinated policy implementation across the gas value chain.

He said the initiative was focused on increasing gas supply and demand, expanding infrastructure, attracting investment, strengthening skills, reforming the market and reducing emissions.(NAN)
