The wife of the Kogi Governor, Hajia Sefinat Ododo, has urged Nigerian women to renew their commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous nation.
Ododo made the call on Thursday at the 66th Independence Day celebration for women and children held at the Glass House, Government House, Lokoja.
She was represented at the event by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Margaret Salifu.
The governor’s wife said the celebration provided an opportunity to commemorate Nigeria’s journey to independence and reflect on values that promote national development.
She identified unity, peace, patriotism, resilience and service as enduring values needed to strengthen the nation.
“Independence Day is not only a time to celebrate, but also to reflect on our responsibility. Everyone has a role to play,” she said.
Ododo urged mothers to continue praying for Nigeria and its leaders while teaching their children to love the country and respect others.
She also urged them to teach their children the values of hard work, discipline, good character and responsibility.
“The value we give them today will shape the Nigeria of tomorrow. Our children are the future,” she said.
Ododo commended Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the President, for initiatives under the Renewed Hope Initiative aimed at empowering women and supporting families and children.
In her remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the Kogi House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Comfort Egwaba, described the anniversary as 66 years of resilience, unity and oneness.
Egwaba said the anniversary was also a call to service, urging Nigerians to contribute to the peace and development of the country.
She commended Gov. Ahmed Ododo for promoting peace across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
“As legislators, we are always ready to do our part to ensure that peace and unity continue to reign in our nation,” Egwaba said.
The wife of the Speaker, Hajia Zainab Umar, said the anniversary provided an opportunity for Nigerians to renew their commitment to building a prosperous nation.
Umar commended the governor’s wife for her empowerment programmes, particularly those targeted at improving the wellbeing of women and families.
Also, the wife of the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Princess Kareemat Abdullahi, called for support for President Bola Tinubu, Gov. Ododo and the All Progressives Congress.
She urged women to prioritise their wellbeing and provide proper care for their families.
Some of the dignitaries, in separate remarks, also prayed for continued peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.
They urged women to remain actively involved in initiatives that would contribute to national development and strengthen families. (NAN)
