The Niger Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, says the State Government has commenced an intensive renovation of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Paiko, damaged by rainstorm.
Shuaibu-Ibrahim disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.
She said the renovation followed the extensive damage caused by the disaster, which made the camp unsuitable to host the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course.
She said the extent of the damage made it difficult for the State Government to complete the repairs within the expected timeframe.
She said that the unfinished project forced the NYSC to relocate the orientation programme to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
Shuaibu-Ibrahim said the renovation had made significant progress, with only a few components remaining.
She said: “The renovation has gone very far. What is left now is not much.
“Gov. Umaru Bago has directed the contractors handling the project to complete it before the commencement of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I Orientation Course.
“Work is moving very fast and I am definitely sure they will meet the deadline.”
Shuaibu-Ibrahim commended Gov. Bago for his commitment to restoring and upgrading the orientation camp, describing his intervention as a major boost to the scheme in the state.
She said the governor was determined to complete the first phase of the renovation within the next 12 months.
According to her, the facilities undergoing renovation include the multipurpose hall, male hostels, camp store and kitchen.
She also disclosed that the State Government had augmented the feeding arrangements for corps members as part of its support for the NYSC.
“I sincerely appreciate the governor for being there for the scheme and for his determination to ensure that the orientation camp is brought back to standard,” she said.
The state NYSC boss said that when completed, the camp would be able to accommodate any number of corps members deployed in the state.
She expressed optimism that the renovated facilities would provide a more conducive environment for corps members and enhance the effectiveness of the NYSC orientation programme in Niger. (NAN)
