
Nasarawa Amazons FC on Saturday emerged champions of the 2026 Women’s President Federation Cup after defeating Heartland Queens FC of Owerri in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the keenly contested final ended 1-1 after regulation time, with Nasarawa Amazons coming from a goal down to level the score in the second half.
The Amazons, however, prevailed against the Heartland Queens in the penalty shootout 4-3 to secure victory.
The triumph marks the club’s third Women’s President Federation Cup title and comes a year after the Amazons suffered defeat in the final.
Speaking after the match, the Captain of Nasarawa Amazons FC, Confidence Nwoha, attributed the team’s success to determination and the encouragement of their coach.
“We thank God for the coach that we have. She is always there to encourage us psychologically. Last year, we lost in the final, and we were determined that this year would be our year,” Nwoha said.
Also reacting, captain of Heartland Queens, Chimebere Opara, described the officiating as fair but expressed disappointment over the result.
“I am not happy that we lost, but I know better days lie ahead. I appeal to the Imo State Government to continue to support us and believe in us. Next year, we will do better,” Opara said.
The dignitaries who witnessed the final were the President, Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, and John Erijo, Chief of Staff, Delta Government House, who represented the Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
In an interview, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, lauded the Amazons for their commitment and dedication that saw them to the end.
Yakubu said that the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, though could not come because of official engagement but has constantly being in touch with the players to encouraged them.
“His Excellency, Gov. Abdullahi Sule is highly fulfilled and I can tell you the he is the most sports loving governor in the country,” he said.
He said that the governor has given approval to build sports infrastructure across the three Senatorial zones of Nasarawa state.
While giving thanks to God for the victory, the commissioner commended the coaches, the technical crew and the players for their dexterity and commitment.
He assured them of the governor’s continuous motivation and support. (NAN)
