The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) on Wednesday conducted basic training for intending exporters in Imo.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training which held in Owerri was organised to equip newly registered and intending exporters with the requisite skills.

NEPC Executive Director, Mrs Nonye Ayeni, said the council remained committed to promoting non-oil exports to diversify the country’s economy.

Ayeni spoke on the theme: “Understanding the Rudiments of Non-Oil Export Business for Seamless Export Journey”.

Represented by the NEPC Coordinator in Imo, Mr Anthony Ajuruchi, Ayeni said the training aimed to prevent the exportation of products on Nigeria’s export prohibition list.

She listed the prohibited products to include maize, scrap metals, raw or sawn timber, unprocessed rubber latex, wildlife animals, artefacts and antiquities.

She further advised intending exporters to carefully assess market availability for their preferred products before venturing into the export business.

According to her, intending exporters should identify their preferred products, available varieties, peak seasons and costs before venturing into export.

“Also, prepare, package and label your products, conduct analysis and secure relevant certifications,” she said.

Also speaking, Mrs Jacintha Akalazu, a senior lecturer in the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Imo State University, Owerri, urged Nigerians to heed the Federal Government’s call to promote non-oil exports.

She said this would further diversify the nation’s economy and reduce dependence on petroleum products.

Mr Emeka Osuji of Nouvel Foods Ltd., another speaker, stressed the need for cluster formation to enhance effective market penetration. (NAN)
