The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Senatorial Candidate for Delta North, Mr Victor Ochei, has called for stronger leadership and accountability in order to genuinely address the country’s socio-economic challenges.

Ochei, a former Speaker, Delta House of Assembly, made the call in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba, on Thursday, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence.

“Today, however, the challenges of poverty, insecurity, unemployment, ethnic and religious tensions and declining living standards demand renewed commitment from both leaders and citizens,” he said.

Ochei urged government at all levels to judiciously deploy public resources, strengthen democratic institutions and create an environment, where citizens could live with dignity, security and hope.

He said Nigeria needed a governance system that placed the welfare and dignity of its citizens at the centre of public administration.

According to him, the country’s 66th anniversary should serve as an opportunity for sober reflection and renewed commitment to nation-building.

He said Nigeria remains richly endowed with human and natural resources, in spite of its history of military interventions, democratic transitions and economic difficulties.

The NDC senatorial candidate said the country’s resilience over the years demonstrated its capacity to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable development.

“We must use this moment to recommit ourselves to building a nation founded on peace, unity, justice, equity, accountability and shared prosperity,” he said.

He said achieving such a nation would require sacrifice, responsible leadership and active participation by citizens.

“At 66, Nigeria deserves a renewed sense of purpose,” Ochei said.

He called on Nigerians to remain patriotic and united in their determination to build a peaceful, prosperous and just nation.

Ochei said the Nigeria of their dream should be a country, where future generations could live with dignity and pride.

He urged Nigerians at home and abroad to use the anniversary to reflect on their collective responsibility towards national development.

He felicitated Nigerians on the 66th independence anniversary celebration and wished the country continued peace, prosperity and progress.(NAN)
