Daily receipts of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, rose by 11 per cent to 50.5 million litres in August, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) says.
The authority disclosed this on Friday in its latest August 2026 factsheet on developments in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sector.
It said the increase was driven by a 39 per cent rise in domestically sourced petrol, in spite of a 26 per cent decline in imported volumes.
The NMDPRA said crude oil receipts by domestic refineries also increased by 17 per cent, from 0.585 million barrels per day (bpd) in July to 0.683 million bpd in August.
It said Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), or diesel, receipts declined by 39 per cent to 14.5 million litres daily, following declines in both domestic supply and imports.
According to the authority, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) receipts fell by 19 per cent, although imports rose by 44 per cent, while Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) receipts increased by 63 per cent to 3.1 million litres daily.
It said petrol consumption declined by 14 per cent to 41.5 million litres daily, based on volumes trucked into the domestic market, while diesel consumption fell by 15 per cent.
The authority added that aviation fuel consumption rose by 22 per cent, while stock sufficiency improved to 22.9 days for petrol and 51.6 days for diesel as at Aug. 31.
It said domestic gas supply, including volumes delivered to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) plant, rose by four per cent to 4.930 billion cubic feet per day.
It said the Dangote Refinery recorded the highest performance among domestic refiners, operating at an average 105.21 per cent capacity utilisation during the month.
“The refinery received 137.98 million barrels of crude, comprising 109.88 million barrels sourced domestically and 28.10 million barrels imported.
“It produced an average 41.94 million litres of petrol, 18.01 million litres of diesel and 24.48 million litres of aviation fuel daily during the month.
The NMDPRA said closing stocks at the refinery as at Aug. 31 stood at 360.4 million litres of petrol, 137.2 million litres of diesel and 133.3 million litres of aviation fuel, while none of the three state-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna recorded production during the month.
Among modular refineries, Edo Refinery recorded the highest capacity utilisation at 90.43 per cent, followed by Walter Smith at 64.77 per cent and Aradel at 58.77 per cent.
OPAC operated at 16.97 per cent capacity, while Duport Refinery remained shut.
The authority said gas utilisation also increased across the power, commercial and industrial sectors in August.
It, however, said LNG export volumes through NLNG declined to 105,317 cubic metres per day, while pipeline exports through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) rose to 0.152 billion cubic feet per day.
It said plant condensate production totalled 14.817 million barrels between January and August, averaging 1.852 million barrels monthly, with June recording the highest monthly output of 2.220 million barrels.
On gas infrastructure, the NMDPRA said the OB3 River Niger Crossing had been completed, while the broader OB3 Gas Pipeline Project stood at 96 per cent completion.
It said the ELPS Midline Compressor Project was 96.37 per cent complete, while the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Pipeline, including its main backbone and ancillary facilities, stood at 80 per cent completion.
The authority added that the Obidi-Warri Expansion Project and Escravos-Obidi Pipeline stood at 71.17 per cent and 27.50 per cent completion, respectively.(NAN)
