) Anambra Government has promised to support the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in addressing the erosion menace at the permanent orientation camp of the corps in the state.
The State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo made the promise while declaring open, the orientation course for 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II at Mbaukwu/Umuawulu, Awka South Local Government Area on Friday.
Soludo who was represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim inspected the emerging gully in the camp premises to appreciate the enormity of the threat, promised to work with scheme to fix it.
“I have noted the concerns about the infrastructure in this camp, and I will report back to the governor for possible intervention.
“We will work with the NYSC management to fix some of the challenges and make life more comfortable here in the camp,” he said.
The governor, who later addressed the newly inducted corps members, urged them to feel at home wherever they were posted for primary assignments and contribute their quotas to the development of the state and nation.
He said Anambra is a state of business minded people, self-sufficient and people with can do spirit where a lot of positive virtues could be learned.
According to him, this is a place to live, work and relax saying that security is assured in the state, we reward hard labour.
Earlier in her address, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, the Coordinator of NYSC in the state, said no fewer than 1,650 corps members including 746 males and 904 females had completed their registration and were taking part in the induction.
Ojisua appreciated the government of Anambra under Soludo for consistent support to the scheme as well as the host communities for their hospitality.
She appealed for the renovation of the camp’s ageing hostels, lecture halls, roads and other critical infrastructure to improve the welfare of corps members, camp officials and enhanced conduct of future camp activities.
She said the orientation course was designed to prepare corps members for a successful service year by instilling discipline, patriotism, leadership and self-reliance with national unity and integration as the core principles.
“To our dear corps members, I urge you to remain disciplined, obey camp rules and participate fully in all activities, especially the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
“Uphold the Oath of Allegiance you have taken today and let your conduct distinguish you for NYSC state and national honours awards,” she said.
On his part, the Chairman of NYSC Governing Board in Anambra, Mr Patrick-Agha Mba urged the inductees to embrace the opportunities for learning, leadership, teamwork and cultural integration that the orientation course offered.
Mba who is the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, said the governing board was committed to providing policy direction and support for the successful implementation of the scheme in Anambra.
“We will work closely with the NYSC management and the state government to ensure that the orientation course is conducted in a safe, conducive and rewarding environment, while promoting the welfare and security of corps members,” he said. (NAN)
