Lagos lawmaker hails Nigeria’s democratic progress

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Rasheed Shabi,says Nigeria has recorded significant progress since it returned to civilian rule in 1999.

Shabi(APC–Mainland II) said this in  an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

He  said though the country was still far from the desired destination, citizens should celebrate the gains recorded and hope for a better future.

“We are not there yet, but we are getting there. Democracy is a journey, not a destination.

“What is important is that we continue to strengthen our institutions, uphold the rule of law and promote good governance for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.

The lawmaker added that democratic governance had provided opportunities for greater citizen participation, improved representation and enhanced accountability in public service.

Shabi acknowledged the many challenges confronting the nation’s democracy, but assured that  things would get better with time.

He said that sustained reforms and responsible leadership were key to addressing them.

Shabi urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to actively participate in the democratic process through civic engagement, constructive dialogue and peaceful conduct.

“Youths are critical stakeholders in the nation’s development, ” he said.

The lawmaker commended efforts by government at various levels to deepen democratic values and promote inclusive governance.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria would continue to advance on the path of political stability, economic growth and national development.

Shabi reaffirmed his commitment to quality representation and people-oriented legislation.

He assured  constituents of his continued support for policies and programmes that would improve their welfare and strengthen governance in the state
