The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday passed into law a Bill seeking to establish the Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council.
The law was passed following the consideration and adoption of a report by the Committee of the Whole House on the bill.
The Majority Leader of the House, Lawal Hussaini, representing Dala Constituency, said the council had the mandate to coordinate activities within the local government areas and the state to boost the economic status of the state.
He explained that the council would be chaired by the state governor, with members comprising the Commissioners for Budget and Planning, Finance, Education, and Justice, as well as the 44 local government chairmen.
Hussaini further said that five eminent personalities with relevant expertise would also be members of the council to make contributions toward improving the economic status of the state.
He added that the state Ministry for Local Government would provide the secretariat for the council when established.
He said: “The objective of the bill is to arrange a programme for the economic development of the state.
“It will also coordinate activities within the local government councils and the state toward the economic development of the state.”
The legislation seeks to establish the council pursuant to Section 7(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and other matters connected therewith.
Also, the member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Ya’u-Gwarmai, urged the assembly to prevail on the state government to make Computer Science a core subject in schools across the state.
He also appealed to the government to provide all the necessary equipment to facilitate effective teaching and learning of the subject in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the state.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail-Falgore, also read a letter from Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf seeking the house’s approval for the nomination of two persons as members of the Kano State Judicial Service Commission.
The nominees included Hajiya Uwani Bello-Makama and Alhaji Ahmad Auwalu-Ibrahim.
