) The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Kano State Branch, has renewed its partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Training School (NITS), Kano, to strengthen humanitarian services, emergency response and capacity building.
The Branch Executive Secretary of the society, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi spoke on Thursday during an advocacy visit to the training school in Kano.
He noted that the visit was aimed at reactivating and strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two organisations, particularly in the areas of emergency preparedness and first aid training.
He emphasised that it is vital for cadets and management staff to acquire emergency response skills in view of current security challenges and other emergencies, adding that the relationship should serve as a model for other states to replicate.
To deepen this institutional collaboration, the Executive Secretary explained that the society will provide the training completely free of charge.
“Under the new plan, the NRCS will train more officers and cadets in emergency first aid at work, while medical personnel and senior officers will receive specialised training in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Responding, the Comptroller and Commandant of the Nigeria Immigration Training School, Kano, Mr. Tony Akuneme, commended the Red Cross for its visit and historic humanitarian interventions.
He stated that the partnership aligns perfectly with the school’s mandate to protect lives and ensure public safety.
Akuneme noted that with over 2,000 cadets currently undergoing training at the institution, accidents and medical emergencies can occur, making immediate first aid knowledge essential.
“The Red Cross will make our work easier by improving the emergency response capacity of our officers and cadets.
“We also hope to establish a more permanent Red Cross presence in the school to further strengthen collaboration and improve service delivery.”Akuneme said.
The Comptroller also raised concerns regarding wider humanitarian issues, noting that many young people embarking on irregular migration remain unaware of the extreme dangers involved.
He stressed that continuous public enlightenment and strong humanitarian support systems are vital to tackling the crisis. (NAN)
