Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plataau has distributed Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs), including 19 mini buses, to the 17 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEA) in the state.
Mutfwang flagged off the distribution of the items Wednesday in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the TLM included 331,355 core textbooks, 19,905 copies of curriculum, and 67,200 copies of teachers’ guides.
Others include 30,000 early-grade reading textbooks, 19 mini jet vehicles, and sewing and knitting machines, among others.
While reiterating his vision that every Plateau child gets quality education, Mutfwang urged that the materials be used judiciously for the achievement of that goal.
“Today’s gathering is a deliberate and strategic step in the policy trajectory of my administration, to reposition basic education in Plateau as the foundation of our collective future.
“We want to ensure that every child in our communities has access to learning that is relevant, safe and of high quality.
“From the outset of this administration, we declared education a priority, and our policy has been clear.
“To strengthen basic education through targeted investments in infrastructure, instructional materials, teacher capacity, and systems that ensure every child has unfettered access to quality education.
“The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has improved greatly; it is no longer as it used to be. We cannot continue to do things the way we used to and expect better results.
“It is a great disservice to these young people when we do not use public funds judiciously to improve the educational standards of our young people,” he stated.
On his part, Mr Samuel Amuna, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, while highlighting the administration’s achievements, commended the state government for its commitment towards the development of the educational sector.
“Today’s gathering is indeed a public testament to an administration that has placed basic education at the centre of its development agenda.
“Your excellency’s visible commitment through policy direction, budgetary prioritisation and personal advocacy has transformed rhetoric into resources and promises into measurable actions.
“That are already changing the learning environment for our children across Plateau,” Amuna said.
Receiving the materials on behalf of the 17 LGEAs, Mr Gyang Pam, Education Secretary of Barkin Ladi Local Government, appreciated the state government and SUBEB for the timely intervention, promising to make good use of the items. (NAN)
