Sani made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 National Assembly Open Week, themed “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform.”

Addressing the leadership of the National Assembly, he urged lawmakers to appreciate the historic significance of their offices and to ensure that their actions leave a lasting and positive imprint on Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“You occupy positions of immense historical importance and bear the responsibility of shaping the course of Nigeria’s democracy through courageous and principled leadership,” he said.

Speaking directly to the leadership of the legislature, Sani emphasized that public office holders must be guided by truth, justice, and the national interest, even when political realities make such choices difficult.

“Mr. President and Mr. Speaker, like those who came before you, you have a unique opportunity to leave an enduring legacy. History will remember leaders who stood firmly for what is right and just,” he added.

The former lawmaker acknowledged that political pressures often discourage leaders from speaking uncomfortable truths or taking bold decisions. Nonetheless, he maintained that effective governance requires integrity, moral courage, and a commitment to justice.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, Sani reminded participants that democracy was achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice by citizens who opposed military rule, endured incarceration, and, in some instances, paid the ultimate price.

According to him, those sacrifices should continue to inspire and guide the nation’s democratic institutions, particularly the National Assembly, in safeguarding democratic values and strengthening governance.

He also recognized the enormous expectations placed on elected officials and the realities of governing in an environment of competing priorities and limited resources. However, he urged lawmakers not to allow these challenges to diminish their impact.

“Leadership is never without its difficulties. Yet, regardless of the circumstances, you must find your place and make a meaningful contribution. You must navigate the turbulence and leave your mark through service and positive action,” he said.
