The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court received 6,727 new cases and disposed of 5,625 in the 2025/2026 legal year, the Chief Judge, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, has said.

Baba-Yusuf disclosed this on Wednesday at the ceremony marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year of the court.

He said the Magistrates’ Courts recorded 23,200 new cases and disposed of 19,292 within the same period.

The chief judge described the new legal year as a moment for institutional reflection and an opportunity for the judiciary to assess ongoing activities.

“For us in the FCT judiciary, every new legal year carries a renewed obligation to serve with integrity, courage, impartiality and diligence.

“It reminds us that behind every case file is a human experience; behind every dispute is an issue that deserves a fair trial and behind every judgment is the responsibility for the constitution, the law and the people of Nigeria,” he said.

He said efforts to strengthen the administration of justice and create an enabling environment for justice delivery in the FCT had shown the need for meaningful reforms beyond incremental adjustments.

According to him, this informed the judiciary’s renewed focus on key policy priorities, including the review of the rules of court and practice directions.

He said other priorities included investment in infrastructure, human capital development, digitalisation, improved case management and appropriate institutional reforms.

According to him, 252 new cases were received in the preceding legal year at the Abuja Multi-Door Courthouse (AMDC) and 195 cases were disposed of within the same period,” he said.

Baba-Yusuf also spoke on infrastructural development, capacity development, automation of court operations and access to justice. (NAN)
