The NANAS Foundation, founded by Hajiya Nafisa Nasir-Idris, wife of the Kebbi Governor, has donated N20 million to women entrepreneurs at its third annual cancer awareness walk in Birnin Kebbi.
Hajiya Nasir-Idris announced the donation at the exhibition of products by small-scale women entrepreneurs, which featured at the walk tagged: “Cancer Awareness Walk 3.0”, held in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
She urged women to prioritise regular medical check-ups for early detection of cancer and other illnesses.
Nasir-Idris reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting cancer patients and people suffering from other ailments.
“Cancer is a killer disease, so I urge my fellow women to patronise health facilities nearest to their communities for periodic checks and tests,” she said.
She said the walk was organised to promote physical fitness and raise awareness of cancer prevention, adding that some patients identified during hospital visits would benefit from the foundation’s assistance this year.
The governor’s wife pledged to sustain her support for women in small-scale businesses for as long as her husband remained governor.
Nasir-Idris urged women to embrace entrepreneurship and skills acquisition to promote self-reliance and improve their economic well-being.
The foundation’s founder said empowering women through small businesses and vocational skills would contribute to economic growth in the state.
She expressed appreciation to the state government for backing the foundation’s activities and other interventions aimed at improving residents’ welfare.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Yakubu Samaila-Augie, commended Gov. Nasir Idris and his wife for sustaining the cancer awareness campaign for three consecutive years.
Samaila-Augie described the 2026 edition as different from previous ones, citing increased mobilisation and a large turnout of participants.
“We thank Her Excellency for the support she is giving to women, particularly in the area of their health, while the governor is funding the Ministry of Health on all needs as they arise,” he said.
The commissioner also commended the governor’s wife for supporting women’s health initiatives and the governor for providing funding for the Ministry of Health.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the walk commenced at the Government House and terminated at the Haliru Abdu Stadium.
Those who participated in the event included wives of commissioners and local government chairmen, women groups, non-governmental organisations, students, government officials and health implementing partners.
