The Adamawa Government has inaugurated the State Teachers Service Commission to strengthen teacher management, improve school administration and enhance the quality of secondary education.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Umar Pella, stated this on Wednesday in Yola during the inauguration of the commission.

Pella said the establishment of the commission was part of the government’s ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the teaching profession and improving service delivery in the state’s education sector.

He explained that the commission would take over the functions of the defunct Post-Primary Schools Management Board, including teacher recruitment, employment, promotion, welfare and school management.

According to him, the reform followed about three years of planning to establish a more efficient structure capable of addressing longstanding challenges in the management of secondary education.

Pella said the commission would also be responsible for ensuring effective school administration, including the management of non-teaching staff and other resources required for the smooth running of schools.

He urged the newly inaugurated chairman and members to remain committed to their responsibilities, noting that managing more than 500 secondary schools in the state would require dedication, integrity and effective collaboration.

The commissioner cautioned the members against inducement, manipulation and other practices capable of undermining the government’s education policies.

He said the government remained committed to free education and expected the commission to promote accountability, discipline and effective management of public schools.

Pella assured the commission of the ministry’s support, while stressing the need for cooperation among education authorities, teachers and other stakeholders to achieve the desired reforms.

In his response, the Chairman of the commission, Dr Saleh Bukar, expressed appreciation to the state government for the confidence reposed in the members.

Bukar said the commission would work to ensure that the government’s investment in basic and secondary education translated into improved learning outcomes.

He said the commission would prioritise producing students with sound knowledge, good character and improved performance in internal and external examinations, particularly those conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The chairman pledged to collaborate with the Ministry of Education, teachers’ unions, parents, development partners and other stakeholders to achieve the commission’s objectives.

He expressed confidence that with the support of the ministry and other stakeholders, the commission would effectively discharge its mandate.

The permanent members of the commission are Mrs Irene Haladu, Rev. Daniel Bulus and Alhaji Adamu Bello, while the part-time members are Alhaji Isa Mohammed, Mr Usman Ayuba and Mrs Bless Calvin.(NAN)
