The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has concluded a management workshop on the review of the 2019-2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS).
The NIS with support from the European Union, also reviewed the Action Plan in preparation for the next policy cycle, 2027-2031.
This is contained in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, by the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptoller of Immigration (DCI) Akinsola Akinlabi.
Akinlabi said the workshop held between Sept. 27 and 30, in the Zuma Rock Resort in Niger State, provided a strategic platform for NIS top management and partners to review progress.
He said the workshop also allowed management to exchange perspectives and consider key priorities towards strengthening Nigeria’s border management framework as well as provided a basis for aligning the review with the priorities of the next policy cycle.
He also said that the workshop reinforced the commitment of the NIS and its partners to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in border management.
Akinlabi quoted the Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, as stressing the need for the next strategy to be anchored on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained inter-agency collaboration.
Nandap noted that the review must provide a clear and actionable framework capable of responding to emerging border management and security challenges, while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.
The engagement featured strategic discussions, technical sessions and group presentations, as well as consolidation of the review outcomes.
The engagement was followed by an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session to review and endorse key recommendations, prioritise interventions, consider financing options and validate the proposed strategic direction for the 2027–2031 policy cycle.(NAN)(NAN)
