The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam-Gwarzo has urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to unity, democracy and good governance.

Abdussalam-Gwarzo made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kano by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba-Shuaibu, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

While  congratulating Nigerians, particularly Kano State residents, the NDC flag bearer advised that the anniversary should remind leaders and citizens of their responsibility to build a nation where people live with dignity, security and hope.

Abdussalam-Gwarzo, a former Kano Deputy Governor, said Nigeria’s 66 years of independence had demonstrated the resilience and determination of its citizens in spite of the challenges confronting the country.

He urged political leaders at all levels to place the interests of citizens above personal and partisan considerations.

According to him, leadership should be measured by its impact on the lives of citizens, particularly through policies that create opportunities for young Nigerians.

The gubernatorial candidate called for greater investment in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, security and job creation, describing the sectors as critical to national development.

Abdussalam-Gwarzo said the economic difficulties confronting many families require urgent and practical interventions to reduce hardship and restore confidence in the country’s future.

He also urged Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious divisions, saying that the country’s diversity should be transformed into an asset for national progress.

“Independence is not simply about the freedom we got in 1960.

“It is about the responsibility we have today to protect our democracy, strengthen our institutions, promote freedom of speech and build a country that works for all,” Abdussalam-Gwarzo said.

The gubernatorial candidate further called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain actively involved in the democratic process and demand accountability from public office holders.

He reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance and a political system that prioritises the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Abdussalam-Gwarzo prayed for peace, security and prosperity for Nigeria and wished citizens a happy 66th Independence Anniversary. (NAN)
