The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Lagos State Chapter, has called on the state government to expedite action on pension enhancement and payment of outstanding entitlements to pensioners.
The party made the call in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, on Tuesday in Lagos.
Kazeem said the call followed reports that pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council, had issued another seven-day ultimatum to the state government.
He said the pensioners had fixed Aug. 31 as the deadline for the government to address their demands over pension enhancement and other outstanding entitlements.
Kazeem said the pensioners had staged a warning protest at Iyana Ipaja area of the state on Monday, appealing to the government to resolve the matter through dialogue.
According to him, the pensioners’ proposal for pension enhancement was submitted in January 2026, while the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) subsequently indicated that approval had been given for an actuary to facilitate the process.
“Months after the submission and the reported approval for the actuarial process, the implementation of the pension enhancement is yet to commence.
“These are men and women who spent decades of their productive lives serving Lagos State and are entitled to the benefits arising from their years of service.
“The APM is asking the Lagos State Government to provide clarity on the status of the proposal submitted in January 2026 and the reported approval for the actuarial process,” he said.
Kazeem also called for the prompt payment of all verified outstanding pension enhancement, wage awards and other legitimate entitlements owed to pensioners.
“The Lagos State Government should take immediate steps to resolve all verified outstanding obligations to pensioners and prevent further delays in the implementation of approved benefits.
“We call on the Lagos State House of Assembly to examine the concerns raised by the pensioners and use its legislative oversight role to support a timely resolution.
“We urge the Lagos State Government to engage the pensioners in good faith and resolve the outstanding issues before the Aug. 31 deadline,” he said.
Kazeem commended the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for pursuing the interests of its members through peaceful engagement and urged all parties to continue with dialogue.
He said the party would continue to support efforts aimed at ensuring that pensioners received their legitimate entitlements.
“The pensioners are entitled to the benefits arising from their years of service, and we urge the government to ensure that all verified obligations are addressed without further delay,” he said.
Kazeem said timely payment of pension benefits remained important to the welfare of retired public servants, given their contributions to the development of the state.
He urged the state government and the pensioners’ representatives to work together towards a mutually acceptable resolution of the outstanding issues
