) Lagos State Government has said international sporting events are helping to drive sports tourism and showcase the state’s cultural and tourism potential to global audiences.
Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, stated this on Friday while speaking with journalists in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor’s aide was reflecting on the successful hosting of the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
NAN also reports that the championships were held at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic, attracting athletes and officials from 20 countries.
Aregbe described the tournament as a destination event that combined sports, tourism and cultural exchange, while promoting Lagos as a preferred destination.
“There’s always a beautiful marriage between sports tourism and culture, and I’m happy that is what Lagos is known for,” he said.
According to him, international.w, competitions provide visitors with opportunities to experience the culture, values and attractions of the host community.
“People come in to experience culture, value and also get to experience the best that Lagos has to offer,” Aregbe said.
He expressed satisfaction with the experience provided by Lagos State to participants and visitors during the championships.
Aregbe said the state would intensify efforts to expose visitors to more attractions and ensure they enjoyed a memorable Lagos experience.
“We are planning to take them around and show them Lagos, making sure Lagos is home to every one of them,” he said.
He commended the Lagos State Government for its continued support for sports, tourism, entertainment and cultural activities.
Aregbe said the government’s commitment had helped Lagos host diverse events that attract visitors and stimulate economic activity throughout the year.
He also highlighted the forthcoming Intermediate Games in October as another opportunity to attract visitors and strengthen sports tourism.
“We don’t want a Lagos that comes alive only in November. Every week and every weekend in Lagos should matter,” he said.
According to him, the Games will attract participants and visitors from within and outside the state, further enriching Lagos’ events calendar.
Aregbe stressed that sports, entertainment and culture were interconnected sectors that offered opportunities to project Lagos positively.
“It’s always the best opportunity for us to showcase what we have in Lagos and let people experience the culture of Lagos,” he said.
Commenting on the Super Falcons, Aregbe said the team deserved continued support in spite of recent setbacks and required greater investment.
“The most important thing is that we must continue. We shouldn’t give up,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to sustain support for the team and implement measures that would strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness internationally.
“We need to transform the team and see how best we can build a better team,” Aregbe added. (NAN)
