) Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, has distributed seven 30-seater buses to tertiary institutions in the state to ease the mobility of their students.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Idris handed over the new vehicles on Wednesday at Government House, Birniin Kebbi to the heads of the institutions, alongside student leaders.
NAN also reports that the institutions that benefitted from the distribution included; Federal University of Science and Technology, Aliero; Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu; and College of Advanced and Legal Studies, Yauri.
Others were Kebbi State College of Science and Technology, Jega; Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari; Kebbi State College of Nursing, Birnin Kebbi; and Kaura Gwandu School of Nursing, Ambursa.
Addressing the beficiaries, Gov. Idris said he took the decision to distribute the buses following complaints he received from the Commissioner for Higher Education and other stakeholders over the plight of the students.
“I received requests through the Commissioner, Special Adviser, and various leaders of the institutions that the students lack mobility, suggesting that government should provide buses to ease their suffering.
“These vehicles are brand new, and I want to call on students’ union leaders to ensure that these vehicles are used for the purposes they are meant for and are not hijacked by management.
“The students need these vehicles more than the management, therefore let them be beneficiaries,” he said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Isa Abubakar-Tunga, disclosed that the administration of Gov. Idris had increased the monthly allocation to tertiary institutions from N5 million to N10 million each.
Abubakar-Tunga noted that many courses that were not accredited before the current administration came on board had now been accredited.
He added that all the tertiary institutions in the state now have governing councils except the newly established Kaura Gwandu School of Nursing, Birnin Kebbi.
He, however, commended Gov. Idris for his continued support to the education sector in the state. (NAN)
