Mr Akinola Idowu, the Chairman, Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, on Friday went on an inspection of Idera Market after discovery of a corpse within its vicinity.
Idowu was accompanied by his Deputy, Mr Wale Fayemi; the Leader of the House, Mr Omotunde Afolabi, councillors, heads of department and community leaders.
During the tour, Idowu observed environmental and security concerns such as parts of the market having become shelter for homeless persons to sleep at night.
“The untidy surroundings and activities of miscreants have created security challenges for traders and residents,” Idowu said.
He noted that such conditions could expose people to criminal activities, if left unchecked by market authorities and government agencies.
Idowu condemned the incident and pledged reforms on security, sanitation and transparency.
“The welfare and safety of market users remain our priority,” Idowu said.
The woman market leader (Iyaloja) of Idera Market, Orile-Agege, Mrs Omobolanle Adebowale and male market leader (Baba Oloja) joined the team after returning from the police station.
Adebowale said she was detained by the police over the issue of an unidentified dead body found in the market.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abattoir Police Division, Mrs Ikeh Augustina, told the delegation that she had reported the incident to the Area Command and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, immediately after the discovery.
She clarified that, “Adebowale and her male counterpart were invited as Heads of the market to assist in the ongoing investigations.” (NAN)
