Bursary
Lagos Island Local Government in Lagos State on Tuesday presented bursary awards to 200 indigent students.
The LG Chairman, Mr Taiwo Oyekan, presented the bursary awards to the beneficiaries at the council secretariat in Lagos.
Oyekan, represented by his Vice Chairman, Mr Arulai Folami said that the initiative would ease the financial burden on their parents and guardians.
He said that the educational intervention by the council would also reduce the dropout rate and promote tertiary academic excellence within the local government area.
The chairman said that the initiative followed his administration’s inauguration of a five-man Bursary Committee to oversee the screening of applicants, toward ensuring a transparent selection process.
He said that 60 medical students received N100,000 each, while 140 Social Sciences and Management Sciences students were awarded N50,000 each.
“The bursary awards presentation will complement the Federal Government-powered Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
“It also aligns with the educational goals of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope.
“I urged all the beneficiaries to study hard and concentrate on their studies, so they can become good ambassadors of Lagos Island,” Oyekan said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Bursary Committee, Mr Moshood Maiyegun, urged the students to scale up their academic performances and cultivate self-discipline.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Adeyemi Adediran, expressed appreciation to the chairman for the disbursement of the tertiary education support fund.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that other educational development initiatives organised by Oyekan are the rollout of free school buses, and distribution of learning materials.
The initiatives also included free summer coaching, distribution of free JAMB/UTME and GCE forms. (NAN)
