The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS2 Zonal Command, says the zone recorded 2,944 traffic offences during a three-day Zonal Special Intervention Patrol (ZSIP).
The patrol code-named “AABO (Safety)”, was conducted simultaneously across Lagos and Ogun States from July 20 to 22.
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olufemi Olonisaye, said this in a statement signed by SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, Sector Public Education Officer on Thursday in Lagos.
Olonisaye noted that the patrol was part of sustained efforts to improve compliance with traffic regulations, strengthen enforcement, and reduce road traffic crashes within the zone.
He added that it was also focused on identifying and correcting dangerous traffic violations, while intensifying public enlightenment on responsible road use and promoting a culture of safety among all road users.
“At the conclusion of the exercise, a total of 2,224 traffic offenders were apprehended for committing 2,944 traffic offences, while 1,423 of the offences were classified as major (focus) offences requiring immediate enforcement attention.
“A breakdown of the operation is as follows: for July 20 in the Lagos sector command: 413 offenders were arrested for 549 traffic offences, including 178 focus offences.
“For Ogun Sector Command: 301 offenders were arrested for 392 traffic offences, including 147 focus offences,” he said.
He added that on July 21, for Lagos sector command: 483 offenders were arrested for 646 traffic offences, including 398 focus offences and Ogun command had 276 offenders arrested for 386 traffic offences, including 112 focus offences.
“On July 22, Lagos sector command had 446 offenders arrested for 592 traffic offences, including 364 focus offences.
“Ogun sector command: 305 offenders arrested for 379 traffic offences, including 224 focus offences,” he said.
Olonisaye commended personnel of the participating commands for their professionalism, resilience, dedication and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property on the highways.
He emphasised that the objective of the operation was not merely to sanction traffic offenders, but to discourage dangerous driving behaviours, strengthen voluntary compliance with traffic laws, enhance public safety and create safer roads for all users.
He further revealed that the Corps Marshal, FRSC, Malam Shehu Mohammed, had directed that the Zonal Special Intervention Patrol (ZSIP) be conducted on a monthly basis across all Zonal Commands.
He pointed out that this was part of the corps’ operational strategy to achieve the targeted 10 per cent reduction in road traffic deaths and injuries this year.
He noted that sustained enforcement, strategic public enlightenment and visible patrol operations remain critical to attaining this objective.
Olonisaye urged motorists to continue obeying all traffic regulations by avoiding speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, route violations, use of mobile phones while driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances and other unsafe practices that contribute to road traffic crashes.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the corps to sustaining intelligence-driven enforcement operations, strategic patrols, stakeholder engagement and continuous public enlightenment across the zone in pursuit of safer roads and the preservation of lives and property. (NAN)
