The Agency also secured 84 convictions during the period under review.

The state NDLEA Commander, Umar Yahuza, made the disclosure on Friday in Lokoja during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to raise awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the day was tagged: “The World Drug Problem – Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses”.

Yahuza said that the command also filed 131 cases before the Federal High Court, Lokoja, while 123 others were at various stages of prosecution.

According to him, the seized drugs include Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, codeine-based syrup, cocaine, tramadol and other psychotropic substances.

He said drug abuse remained a major catalyst for insecurity, including banditry, insurgency and other violent crimes, stressing that the command had intensified both drug supply and drug demand reduction strategies to tackle the menace.

Yahuza said the command received three suspects, three Toyota Camry vehicles and 566.951kg of Cannabis sativa from the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade, Lokoja.

He added that the Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard transferred two suspects and a vehicle containing 91.794kg of psychotropic substances, while the Police Command in Kogi handed over four suspects, a Honda Pilot SUV and 271.2kg of Cannabis sativa.

He said the suspects had been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lokoja, adding that final forfeiture had already been secured on some of the seized vehicles.

On rehabilitation efforts, Yahuza said the command counselled 299 drug-dependent persons through brief intervention programmes, while seven others referred by their families had been rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.

He said the command had intensified public enlightenment programmes on the dangers of drug abuse across the state.

Yahuza said NDLEA is collaborating with the Kogi Ministry of Agriculture to introduce an Alternative Development Programme aimed at encouraging cannabis cultivators to abandon the illicit trade and embrace lawful means of livelihood through empowerment initiatives.

He also said the Federal Government, through the NDLEA and the Federal Ministry of Education, has introduced Drug Integrity Tests for new and returning students of tertiary institutions.

According to him, some tertiary institutions in Kogi have adopted the policy, while others are encouraged to key into the initiative, describing it as a deterrent rather than a punitive measure.

Yahuza commended Gov. Ahmed Ododo for supporting security agencies and appreciated the State Security Adviser, Commodore Jerry Omodara, for strengthening collaboration in the fight against drug abuse.

In her address, Mrs Sefinat Ododo, the wife of Kogi governor said stakeholders must choose hope over despair, and prevention over punishment in addressing drug abuse.

Mrs Ododo, represented by Oluwasomidire Simon, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at protecting young people from substance abuse through sustained advocacy, rehabilitation and community engagement.

In his address, the Special Adviser to the governor on Drug Abuse, Mr Treasure Achimugu, commended NDLEA for its sustained efforts in combating illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the state. (NAN
