The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated the Nigerian Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) steering committee, amplifying the corps commitment to reducing road crashes across Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement by the FRSC Corp Public Education Officer (CPEO), Osondu Ohaeri, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Thursday.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, inaugurated the committee on Thursday in Abuja.
Mohammed said that the inauguration of the committee highlighted the corps’ commitment to strategic partnerships and evidence based road infrastructure safety management.
He also describing the inauguration as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to build safer roads and achieve global road safety targets aimed at reducing fatalities across Nigeria.
He noted that road traffic crashes remained a major public health and development challenge globally, emphasising that proactive infrastructure assessment remained critical to protecting road users and saving lives.
According to him, The NigeriaRAP is established by the FRSC in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to systematically evaluate road infrastructure safety, identify and eliminate high-risk road sections, and enhance protection for vulnerable road users.
“The programme is anchored on three strategic pillars of strengthening local partnerships, fostering international collaborations, and promoting the attainment of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.”
The corps marshal recalled that Nigeria’s journey towards institutionalising the programme began with the inauguration of the stakeholders committee in February 2021.
He added that it was further strengthened with the signing of the National Licence Agreement between FRSC and iRAP on Nov. 18, 2025.
He noted that the steering committee was expected to provide strategic direction, coordination, and leadership for the successful implementation of the programme.
Mohammed said that membership of the committee comprised key stakeholders drawn from both the public and private sectors, including the KRSD Foundation, Federal Ministry of Works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
According to him, other members are stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), as well as the Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN).
“The Green Light Initiative, and other strategic partners committed to advancing road safety and sustainable transportation in Nigeria have also been included”.
While appreciating committee members for demonstrating commitment to the initiative, the corps marshal charged them to remain proactive and dedicated in discharging their responsibilities towards achieving the objectives of NigeriaRAP.
He expressed confidence that through collective action, sustained collaboration, and strategic investments in safer road infrastructure, the programme would significantly contribute to reducing road traffic fatalities and creating a safer road transport environment for all Nigerians.
