A group, Safe House for Justice and Human Empowerment Centre (SHJHEC), has called on the Federal Government and the security agencies to secure farming and other vulnerable communities in Plateau.
Mrs Edit Gamut, the Executive Director of the organisation, made the call during a news conference commemorating the 2026 World Humanitarian Day, on Wednesday in Jos.
Gamut, a legal practitioner said that the event was organised in collaboration with the Ascend Community Wellness Centre and Relief and Hope Foundation (RAHF).
Gamut, who decried the humanitarian crisis in Plateau due to prolonged insecurity, called on government at all levels to curb the situation.
She particularly decried that the failure of government to secure farming communities, would lead to food insecurity in Plateau and the country in general.
The executive director, further called on the government to intensify efforts towards early warning and rapid response mechanisms in tackling the menace.
“Recent findings have revealed that many households are unable to access farmlands and income-generating opportunities, leaving both displaced persons and host communities increasingly vulnerable.
“For farming communities in particular, insecurity has cut off many families from their farmlands and income-generating opportunities.
“The resulting loss of productive assets has deepened food insecurity, poverty and vulnerability while placing additional pressure on host communities
“So, we are calling on both the federal and state governments to protect civilians, not just territories; strengthen early warning and rapid response systems, secure farming communities and support safe access to farmlands,”she called.
Also speaking, Mr Nanmak Bali, the Executive Director of RAHF, decried the looming humanitarian crisis in Plateau due to increased displacement of residents.
He further decried the absence of healthcare facilities, quality education, safe water and sanitation facilities and other basic facilities in vulnerable communities.
“So, we call on the government to scale up support for food security, protection, shelter, mental health, livelihood and psychosocial support to particularly women, children and persons with disabilities in displaced communities,”he said.
