A 41-year-old driver, Abdullahi Akinleye, was on Monday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a car hire purchase agent of N5 million.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge bordering on forgery, fraud and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Foluke Adedosu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 12, 2025, at No. 4, Okikilade St., Oremeji Agugu, Ibadan. Adedosu said the defendant, with intent to defraud, obtained a Toyota Camry with Registration No. AKL 725 A.E valued at N5 million on hire purchase from one Akeem Alao.
She added that he unlawfully converted the vehicle to his personal use and subsequently sold it to another person without the owner’s consent. The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant forged the vehicle’s original documents, which he used to facilitate the resale of the car.
She said the offences contravened Sections 390(9), 419 and 467 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Defence counsel, Mr O.S. Akinbode, applied for bail on liberal terms. The Magistrate, Mrs A.T. Omidiji, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. Omidiji adjourned the case until May 13 for hearing.
