An Agriculture Consultant, Babatunde Olarewaju, on Sunday urged youths to look into other areas of the agricultural value-chains like storage, cold-chain, distribution and supply among others.
Olarewaju, speaking to our source in Lagos, added that there were more than enough farmers in the produce production section of the business.
According to the Lead Strategist of Futux Agri Consult Limited, government and other stakeholders needed to be more specific when encouraging youths to invest in agriculture.
Olarewaju also said that the cold-chain innovation was one area open for the youth to invest in because it had yet to be utilised optimally to ensure freshness in vegetables.
“We seem to get it wrong when we tell youths to take up agriculture because we do not let them know which areas they need to invest.
“We have many farmers handling the produce production section but other areas like the supply, distribution, logistics, marketing, cold-chain and storage as well as many others.
“When we let them know, then it will appeal to them, most of them are not interested in production because of the work involved but if they acquire equipment like cooling vans, farmers will hire from them.
“By so doing, the value-chains embedded in agriculture will be developed and fresh vegetables will be available for all,” he said.
Olarewaju also said that farmers in the country were producing enough to meet the needs of the population and ensured food sufficiency.
He lamented the lack of manpower and equipment among others that limited development of other value-chains in the sector.
